Submitting Assignments

There are many options for submitting assignments, including attaching the document to an e-mail message, posting a file to the discussion board, sending the assignment through the Digital Drop Box, or by using the Assignment Tool. E-mail is quick but requires that the instructor create a tracking system on their personal computer. The discussion board works well but it is not a good solution for independent work. This leaves the Digital Drop Box and the Assignment Tool.

Assignment Tool

All of these options have their advantages but the Assignment Tool is the recommended method. Features of the Assignment Tool include:

  • Automatically creates an entry in the Gradebook
  • Tracks all associated assignment documents
  • Provides a space to share comments between the student and instructor.

Note: To understand how the tool is used to submit your assignment and view your final grade, click the links below. (These tutorials were developed for the previous version of Blackboard but the steps still apply.) Links to Assignments appear with the course content.

Digital Drop Box

The Digital Drop Box enables students to electronically exchange files with their instructor. It is also used as a storage area if you are working on a file from more than one computer. However, we are recommending that both students and faculty use the Assignment Tool in its place. We also recommend that students use their Blackboard Content space to store their course work.

Note: If your instructor does decide to use the Digital Drop Box, be sure to Use the SEND FILE button to submit a completed file to the instructor. Instructors do not see your file if you ADD your work. You will find the link to the Digital Drop box with your Course Tools.
