M. Ed. (C.I.T.) Portfolio and Comprehensive Exam Information (as of September, 2006)

Culminating Activity

Each candidate for the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instructional Technology must complete a two-part culminating activity during the last semester of their graduate program.

Part 1 consists of the presentation of a portfolio, that includes examples of how the student fulfilled the requirement of completing a seventy-five hour field experience.

Part 2 consists of a written comprehensive examination completed online. A comprehensive examination consists of three questions (issues) posed by the faculty. Students are required to respond to these issues based on the knowledge they have gained from their coursework. These issues will be representative of topics covered in both core and concentration courses.

Field experience: Field experience work is required for licensure by the DOE and is an integral part of a M.Ed. at FSC.  For the degree in Curriculum and Instructional Technology, students are required to complete a minimum of seventy-five hours of field experience work.  These hours should be distributed among the five concentration courses at the discretion of the student. To document this work, the student must maintain an electronic portfolio to be submitted one week prior to the comprehensive examination.  If you have any questions about this requirement, please write to Dr. Graham at czgraham@hotmail.com.

Portfolio requirements: The portfolio must be designed to reflect your direct field experiences with students. It must be organized according to the following:

  1. Cover letter describing briefly how you allocated your seventy-five hours of direct field experiences. This cover letter must be dated and signed. Please include your address, phone number and email address.

  2. An outline or table of contents reflecting the information in your portfolio.

  3. Selected items to validate your field experiences - examples might include lesson plans, Power Point, Web home page, etc.

Please send Dr. Graham (czgraham@hotmail.com) the URL for your electronic portfolio no later than a full week before the exam date.

Comprehensive Exam

The written comprehensive examination is administered three times per year on the first Saturday of April, August, and December.

Access to the online exam is made available on the examination date at 8:30 AM through the Blackboard CIT site. While the examination is designed to take three hours, all students MUST submit the examination responses by 2 PM. NO examinations will be accepted after 2 PM. While many students make use of study groups to prepare for the examination, consultation or cooperation with classmates or others during the exam is strictly forbidden.

Application forms are obtained by calling the Graduate Office at 508-626-4550.

Important! Please submit your Commencement and Comprehensive Examination Application by the following deadlines: deadline for August graduation is April 15; deadline for December graduation is August 15; and deadline for May graduation is January 15.
